Yet, on Wednesday, they found themselves in a nail-biting tie with Ball State University in 12 frames, a game that was halted due to insufficient lighting in the ballpark.
Wednesday's game against Ball State was a crucial one for the Hoosiers. Their midweek losing streak, including four opponents ranked worse than 100th in the NCAA Baseball RPI, has put them in a precarious position. Unfortunately, their offensive slumps and bullpen issues have further complicated their path to the NCAA Tournament, making this game's outcome more significant.
Both of those things were noticeable at various points during Wednesday's game against Ball State, which was initially supposed to take place on Tuesday night at Victory Field in Indianapolis. In Indiana's staff game, right-handed sophomore Ethan Phillips started but only lasted one inning. The Cardinals took a 4-0 lead when junior Nick Husovsky of Ball State smashed a single to right field, scoring his second RBI of the game. Joey Brenczewski, a redshirt freshman at first base for the Hoosiers, has hit in six straight games—his fourth-inning single drove in sophomore Devin Taylor for the team's first run.
On offense, Pyne, Taylor, Cerny, Brenczewski, and Stadler recorded multi-hit games, and Indiana used an incredible eleven arms. The result was Indiana's first tie since a 2017 match against Nebraska, which ended in a 1-1 draw. The Hoosiers improved to 22-18-1 on the season.
